Could someone tell me where I can get some infrared binoculars?

Also, am I safe in assuming that Infrared Illuminator and infrared monocular are the same?

Bushnell makes binoculars with a built in infrared monocular. I just found one on Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Night-Watch-Infrared-Monocular/dp/B000F4GIBQ You could also check http://armysurplusstore.com/ under their “optics” section.

I /think/ that an illuminator is used in CCTV and other video surveillance systems while a monocular is hand held, but am not *entirely* sure. Depending on who you are stal……er, I mean what you want to do with it, you’d look for them under the appropriate name for the usage. Again, check the Army surplus store or even Amazon. It’s amazing the things you can find there. I even found “used” communion wafers on Amazon once, something I chose NOT to ponder too deeply.

I blame the educational system, really. Really I do. :(

Yes, more or less. Binocular mean two, or bi, oculars. Mono means one. So, a monocular means one viewing piece, and binocular means two. This is why one is usually a single tube, and binoculars are two tubes, one for each eye.

Now, the Infrared Illuminator is another story. Infrared is a wavelength of light, that we can’t see usually. We have one type, that is passive, and one that is active. In this case, the active is the actual Illuminator, that emits the light so that the lens can pick it up. You can use these in total darkness, like in a cave. Passive, however, need the moon, stars, and some other form of light to see with/by. No sun, though,as this will usually “white” them out.

They are also called NVG or Nigh Vision Goggles, for the binoculars. These can usually be WORN, like glasses, where binoculars are hand held like regular binoculars. Oh, and I don’t think they can work like regular binoculars, as far as range goes. In this case, IR usually are limited to the range of the IR illuminator, say to 100 yards or so. Binos are also 2x (power) and higher, where most NVGs are 1x, so you can wear them while walking and such. :)

Now, please allow some room for error. I haven’t played with these for a while, and they may have changed.
