What Is a good binoculars under $350/RM1000 for astronomy use?

Hi,

I am looking on getting binoculars for astronomy use. I am currently thinking of getting the "Celestron SkyMaster 16x70". Is this a good enough binoculars for me as an amateur astronomer. Do I need a different binoculars if I do so, what would the suggestions of binoculars be?

I have a budget of 1000MYR or 350 USD. Please help me.

Thank you so much in advance

I own both 10×50 and 15×70 binoculars, but I find that I use the 10×50s a hundred times for every time I use the 15×70s. The latter are too heavy and very hard to hold steady. They could be mounted on a tripod, but this, to me, defeats the purpose of binoculars. So, I’d recommend 10×50s from a major manufacturer like Orion, Celestron, or Nikon.

Hmmm, …, I own a pair of Bushnell Powerview 10X50 Binoculars. They are useful not only for Astronomy but also for birding and other events. You can buy the 12X50’s from Wal*Mart from $39.99 USD. The problem with 70mm binoculars is the weight. They are just too heavy to hold or easily carry around. As a result, you need a binocular trapezoid (or other) mount in order to use them with a properly stabilized image. I have seen people use a telescoping (broom handle) mount and that makes them a lot more portable. But as Geoff has said, just because they are much less bulky, the 10X50’s are a lot more portable over the 16X70’s.

BTW, did you know that for less than $350 USD you could buy a nice 8″ dobsonian scope? See: http://www.telescope.com/control/telescopes/dobsonian-telescopes/orion-skyquest-xt8-classic-dobsonian-telescope.

My favorite binoculars that everyone loves when I bring them around to star parties are the Celestron Sky Masters 25×100. I belong to The Chicago Astronomical Society, Adler Planetarium, the Chicago Astronomer, and SWAOG (the Southwest Astronomical Observers Group). These binoculars are by far the best binoculars I have ever personally used.

I have had quite an opportunity to check out many different models in my many decades in amateur astronomy. Yes, these are big and they are heavy (about 10 pounds) but with a decent tripod, this set of binoculars are the best for the price anywhere. I purchased them Amazon for $249.00 years ago and the price has been going up over time. They now sell at about $299.95 on Amazon.

I help out with the boy scouts and girl scouts in the Chicago area and they all love my binoculars! Especially all the adults! I keep them in their case and with the tripod in my trunk you can never know when something interesting might appear in the sky… ;-) …and, they will last a lifetime!
