Comets are highly unpredicatble, they can appear without warning from the edge of the solar system, and even one that we know about can make sudden outbursts and become suddenly brighter. No one knows when the next Great Comet will pass by
The next predicted comet is 103P/Hartley : a periodic comet that will pass within 18 million km of earth on October 20th. It is predicted to be a magnitude 5.4 object, so possibly just visible to the naked eye, But dark skys and binoculars are recommended
Don’t expect to see a glorious tail sweeping back across the sky, the comet will appear as a little fuzzy blob, in Cygnus.
Comets that bright are quite rare, and we usually get little advance notice. Check the site below at the beginning of each month to find out what comets will be visible that month. Greg always lists the brightest ones first.
